Privacy Policy for Google Lens – Search your screen
At Google Lens – Search your screen, we care about privacy by design. This Privacy Policy explains how Google Lens – Search your screen (“the extension”) handles information when you use it.
Important disclaimer (third-party extension) Google Lens is a product and trademark of Google LLC. Google Lens – Search your screen is a third-party browser extension and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or created by Google LLC.
Data Collection: No Personal Data Collection by the Extension Google Lens – Search your screen does not collect, sell, or transmit your personal data to the developer or to any developer-operated servers.
No accounts: The extension does not require sign-up or login. No analytics/tracking: The extension does not include analytics SDKs or tracking pixels. No developer servers: The developer does not operate backend servers that receive your browsing activity, screenshots, images, or search queries.
What Data is Stored (Locally in Your Browser) To provide features and remember your preferences, the extension stores certain data locally using your browser’s extension storage (such as chrome.storage.local / chrome.storage.sync):
Your settings (enabled features, menu toggles, preferences) Feature configuration values (for example, how the extension opens visual search results) Temporary UI state needed for functionality
This data stays inside your browser’s extension storage and is not sent to the developer.
How Search Works (Third-Party Websites) The extension helps you perform visual searches by opening Google Lens in a tab or window. When you use the extension:
The extension may open a Google Lens page (for example https://lens.google.com/). Depending on your action, the extension may upload an image to Google Lens by simulating user-driven upload/drag-drop behavior.
Google Lens is a third-party service. Your use of Google Lens is governed by Google’s privacy policy and terms. The extension does not receive your Google Lens results.
Screenshots & Image Handling Some extension features work by capturing visual information from your screen or selected media, for example:
Full Screen Search: Captures the visible tab (a screenshot) to send to Google Lens. Search Specific Area: Lets you select an area and captures only that region. Search Local Image: Lets you choose an image file from your device and sends it to Google Lens.
Important notes:
Screenshots or images are processed by the extension to perform the action you requested. The extension does not send screenshots/images to any developer servers (we don’t run servers for this). The image is sent to Google Lens (a third-party service) to perform the visual search.
Permissions We Use & Why The extension requests only the permissions needed to provide its features:
storage Used to save your settings and preferences locally (and optionally sync them where supported).
scripting Used to inject UI/selection tools (such as the “Search Specific Area” overlay) into pages when you trigger the feature.
contextMenus Used to provide right-click menu actions like “Search This Image” and quick tools.
tabs Used to open Google Lens in a new tab/window and to interact with the current tab for user-triggered actions.
activeTab (if included) Used to temporarily access the current tab when you invoke the extension.
host permissions (as declared in manifest, e.g. <all_urls> if present) Required so the extension can operate on many websites when you trigger its features (for example, injecting the selection overlay or enabling right-click tools on most pages). The extension does not use these permissions to track you.
Restricted Pages (Where the Extension May Not Work) Some sites and browser pages restrict extensions from running scripts or capturing content (examples include the Chrome Web Store and certain internal browser pages). In those cases:
Extension features may be disabled or may not function on that page. This is a browser/platform restriction, not data collection.
Third-Party Services The extension does not include third-party analytics or tracking services.
However, the extension integrates with third-party websites when you use its functionality, primarily:
Google Lens (for visual searching)
When you use those services, their privacy policies apply to those interactions.
Changes to This Policy We may update this Privacy Policy if the extension changes. Updates will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
